Setting the standard in upscale luxury cars, Audi continues to lead the way in making driving safer. Audi’s new digital rear-view mirror consists of an intelligent camera and monitor system to ensure an ideal view of what’s behind your vehicle.
The new technology will enter production in the Audi R8 e-tron model which has no rear window and consequently no conventional rear-view mirror. This camera/monitor concept produces a high-contrast, brilliant image of what is behind the car and displays it where a rear-view mirror would hang in the vehicle. The display can be dimed or deactivated at any time.
The ultra-lightweight camera is heated in cold temperatures so the driver always has a clear view of what’s behind the vehicle. A 7.7” color monitor is mounted where a conventional rear-view mirror would be to display the image captured by the camera. The display screen is more energy efficient and lighter than conventional LCD monitors also.
Audi’s digital rear-view mirror debuted at the Le Mans 24 Hours in the R18 e-tron Quattro and R18 ultra race cars. After proving itself on the race track, the green light has been given to put this new technology into series production with the Audi R8 e-tron.
